Jakub Bijak

We’re very excited to announce that Professor Jakub Bijak joins the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science (LCDS) as Professor of Demographic Science — in a joint appointment with Reuben College, University of Oxford — starting 1 February 2026.

With over 25 years of experience, Jakub is recognised as one of the leading figures in statistical demography, migration studies, and population forecasting. His pioneering work — from Bayesian migration modelling to digital trace analysis and early warning systems for asylum flows — has not only advanced academic research but also shaped major international policy debates at the European Commission, the United Nations, and the OECD.

Amongst many achievements at the University of Southampton, Jakub led two incredible initiatives: the ERC project Bayesian Agent-based Population Studies and the Horizon 2020 QuantMig consortium, redefining how we understand and plan for migration futures.

Jakub shared his excitement about the move:
“I am thrilled to be joining the fantastic team at LCDS and the Demographic Science Unit. As a great fan of interdisciplinary thinking and methodological rigour, I look forward to working together on solving some of the key demographic challenges of the 21st century.”

We can’t wait for Jakub’s migration and forecast a great future ahead — one that’s bound to have lasting effects on our cohort… with a very small margin of uncertainty.
