To celebrate Demography Day on Wednesday 15 February, the Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science has launched a video with Oxford Sparks on how demographers are understanding and improving our world. Watch the video below!

Founded by Population Europe last year, European Day of Demography is a celebration of demographer's work to understand society and the challenges we face.

The Leverhulme Centre for Demographic Science, directed by Professor Melinda Mills and funded by the Leverhulme Trust, is at the forefront of demographic research that impacts academia, society and policy.

The Centre’s video follows the journey of three of our demographers as they use new types of data, methods and unconventional approaches to improve our understanding of human populations.

In the video, Dr José Manuel Aburto outlines the power of demography to tackle the most challenging issues of our time from the impact of violence to COVID-19. Professor Ridhi Kashyap shows how new data from internet and mobile technologies can help demographers understand the world, and empower disadvantaged social groups. The Centre’s Deputy Director Professor Jennifer Dowd explores how demographers shed light on inequalities using diverse data sources, from biological to social.

The trailer features Dr José Manuel Aburto as he highlights how demography can improve our understanding of important issues such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

In 2021 the Centre won the O2RB Excellence in Impact Awards for their data driven policy interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic. The prize, supported by the University of Oxford’s Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Impact Acceleration Account, funded the video.

The Centre would also like to thank the Leverhulme Trust, European Research Council, Horizon 2020 European Commission, The British Academy, UKRI ESRC, Nuffield College and other partners for making this research possible.
