Jose Ignacio Carrasco

PhD
Lecturer in Sociology

José Ignacio Carrasco is a Lecturer in Sociology at the Department of Sociology, where he teaches Life Course Research in the MPhil in Sociology and Demography, and Quantitative Methods in the Human Sciences undergraduate programme.

His research spans sociology, demography, social development, and migration studies, drawing on a life course approach and employing a wide range of quantitative, demographic and computational methods. In recent years, Ignacio has developed a strong interest in agent-based and microsimulation modeling, with a particular focus on integrating micro and population level outcomes. He is also engaged in using large-scale bibliometric data to examine global disparities in migration research and to investigate gender inequalities in scientific production and careers.

Before joining the Department of Sociology, Ignacio was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oxford's Centre on Migration, Policy and Society (COMPAS), where he remains an affiliated member. In this role, he contributed to the MIGNEX (Aligning Migration Management and the Migration–Development Nexus) and MORE (Motivations, experiences and consequences of returns and readmissions policy: revealing and developing effective alternatives) projects.

Ignacio has a PhD in Political and Social Sciences from Pompeu Fabra University (UPF). He holds a Master of Science in Demography from Stockholm University, a Master in Migration Management from UPF, and a degree in Sociology from the University of Chile. He is an affiliate at the Max Planck Institute of Demographic Research (MPIDR) Laboratory of Population Dynamics and Sustainable Well-Being.
